| Ending
the Great Debates |

Last Sunday’s closing ceremonies in Beijing marked the
ceremonial end of the Olympic Games. The Olympic flame was extinguished,
but as with every major sporting event, the conclusion of the event
ignites the beginning of new eternal debates on what had just been
observed. Who is the greatest Olympian, Michael Phelps, Carl Lewis,
or perhaps even Birgit Fisher-Schmidt (a canoeist representing Germany
who won 12 Olympic medals over a remarkable 24-year span)? Who was
better, Nastia Luikin or Nadia Comaneci? Could this year’s
USA basketball Dream Team beat the original with Bird, Magic, and
Jordan?
In many a bar or lunchroom cafeteria, these questions are likely
to be debated, discussed, and dissected for hours upon hours. The
discussions will get heated, but the beauty of the whole thing is
that everyone’s opinion matters—there is never a way
to prove the right answer. With Nadia happily married and Magic
focused on lucrative business ventures, we can never know what would
have happened had they gone head-to-head with their modern day counterparts.
